MOBILE PHONE FORENSICS

In a similar way to that of computers, mobile telephones have the capability to hold large amounts of data which can be of great benefit to criminal litigation. Data can be recovered from the handset, the SIM card and any additional memory cards. During the course of our analysis it is important that no calls or text messages are made or received as this could not only contaminate the integrity of the evidence, but could also potentially remove data from the device. Therefore, network access is blocked by the use of a specifically created ‘access card’ which acts as a clone of the SIM card and is used during the analysis of the handset.

Mobile Telephone Analysis

Subject to the make and model of the mobile telephone, it is possible to recover the following information:

  • Contacts (phone book)
  • Call logs
  • SMS (text messages)
  • Pictures
  • Videos
  • Audio (to include voice recordings where relevant)
  • Internet history
  • Bluetooth device history
  • E-mails

Cell Site Analysis

Cell Site Analysis is the science of being able to locate the geographical area of a phone when calls, SMS (Short Message Service) or downloads are made or received, either in real time or historically. These services are generally used by law enforcement agencies with the purpose of ensuring that a suspect was indeed at the scene of the crime at the time of the crime. The information provided is generally used for evidential purposes. If a call is made from a mobile phone or a call is received from another phone to the mobile phone in question, or if an SMS is either sent or received then there will be records of this event. Using data from the networks and the skills of the network engineers, mobile phone signal strength readings are taken from various locations around the site in question to narrow down exactly where a mobile phone is being used.
